Help Save EDM With These 3 Rules For Proper Show Etiquette

Dear EDMers,

Happy Holidays! I hope the festive season was good to you all. In the spirit of giving, I’ve decided to give you all some quick EDM show etiquette guidelines. You see, there are a couple of unwritten rules about these raging shows, and as EDM made its way up the popularity ladder, it would appear that some of these rules have gotten lost along the way. I’m here to help put them back in place. Here are 3 simple rules:

Rule #1 – P.L.U.R.

Learn it. Believe it. Love it. Live it. Peace, Love, Unity, Respect. P.L.U.R. is a raver’s ideology. If you cannot respect that, then you do not belong. Understand that everyone at the show was brought together for the love of EDM music. Take a minute to understand how beautiful and rare that is in todays world. Once you’ve understood that, appreciate it. Do not come to a show with a hot head, ready to start a fight with anyone who may bump into you. Look out for one another. There is something bigger than any of your egos at these shows, and that’s its power to unify everyone in the room. On that note, here are a few P.L.U.R tips:

  • If you bump someone or accidentally knock someone mid fist pump, apologize.
  • If you’re walking through the crowd, especially if you’re part of a never ending conga line, say thank you to those letting you through. If someone needs help, help them.
  • If you’re coming to the show, come prepared. Sharing is caring, but I cannot handle one more person asking me for a sip of my water, a piece of gum, or my lip balm.
  • Show some love for everyone! Not just for your fellow ravers, but for the your bartender/barmaid too. Nothing grinds my gears more than going to a show and seeing a bartender/barmaid having to ask for a tip.

Rule #2 – The Dance Floor

Welcome to the dance floor, the rules of the game are simple: Dance. Nothing kills a vibe more than a sea of still bodies. Likewise, while you’re getting your groove on, be aware of your surroundings. If you feel someone touching your back while you’re dancing away, please note that they are not interested in the material your sweaty t-shirt is made of. By way of the EDM unspoken language, they are politely asking you to please take it down a notch. You are probably getting all up in their space, and that’s just not fun. If you can’t control those serious dance moves, that’s alright; make your way to the sides or the back of the venue, where you’ll probably have way more dance space.

Rule #3 – Accessories.

I thank you all for the light show you put on with your flashing mouth pieces and glowing finger clips. Your contribution to the evening is wonderful, but please, keep your glow sticks and batons to yourself. Being hit in the face with one of these things is the worst! People who tie their glow stick to a string and whip it around like their about to lasso a cow.. please stop. This goes for any kind of accessory you may bring. If it’s going to be hitting people in the head, or getting in everyone’s way, please rethink bringing it to the show.

And please, for the love of all that is holy, leave your stupid whistle at home! This is only a short list, but there are tons of unwritten EDM rules that are being neglected. Let me know which ones have been bothering you lately? Anything else fellow ravers should keep in mind? Comment below!
