NIKKEI MTL : Japanese / Peruvian Fusion Done Right
The city is home to many amazing restaurants, from authentic tastes to culinary innovations. Some say there is a debate to have when considering the delicate art of fusion cuisine, making sure every ingredient is carefully respected, and others simply enjoy the adventure that type of meal takes them on. In both cases, Montreal has a great selection of talented chefs who execute beautifully fusion dishes on their menus, and we never get tired of new ones joining the scene. When fusion is done right, it creates a whole new level of flavour discoveries, and Nikkei hit the nail on the head.

Located at 1577 Laurier E, Nikkei MTL offers a tapas formula in a casual yet stunning setting. On the menu : specialties from Peruvian cuisine mixed with Japanese touches and techniques. From the bonito ceviche served with ponzu sauce to their filet mignon tataki with togarashi seasoning, the team behind Barranco showcases once again they know good food and warm hospitality.

Inspired by the perfect marriage of Peruvian and Japanese cuisines, executive chefs and partners Daniel Silva and Michelangelo Miceli crafted a refined menu that seamlessly unites the two cultures. Nikkei cuisine comes from the encounter between the textures and spicy flavors of Peruvian cuisine added to the raw foods and fine Japanese techniques.
Delicate plating, unique flavour combinations and strong flavours are to be expected, making this restaurant a must on every foodie’s list. Portions are perfect for the tapas concept, and often follow the all-in-one-bite idea. Dishes pack a punch in every direction of the flavour spectrum, making Nikkei approachable (everyone will find something they like), yet unique in their offering.

For the decor, the restaurant has been embellished with colorful murals by artist Anthony Pecoraro (@saint_teetz) that bring the space to life. The design, courtesy of Rebel design, fits perfectly the 1,380 square foot premises that hosts a capacity of 70 seats inside and 40 seats outside.
Its high ceilings, the large open concept kitchen, and the massive burnt wood Japanese-style bar all come together nicely to give a strong personality to the space. Add in some leather-finish granite countertops, the wall-mounted pantry and the velvet booths, and you have Nikkei – a cozy atmosphere in a refined place.
