[Interview] Sander Van Doorn at New City Gas
If there’s one thing I’ll always remember about SanderVan Doorn’s set at New City Gas this past weekend, it’s that there’s nothing more contagious than a smile. Damn.
Just thinking about how happy Sander looked performing makes me so happy that you could suggest both myself, and the rest of Montreal were ironically entranced by his trance set. For those who didn’t get to make the show because it sold out almost immediately, all I have to say is that it sold out for a reason.
Unlike most basic concert crowds, Sander’s fans proved to be the crème de la crème when we rallied a sit-down, parallel to a small-scale version of what no Swedish House Mafia concert was complete without. This moment was talked about repeatedly after the concert, will continue to be talked about, and even came close to trending on twitter.
If you don’t know what a sit-down is, watch the following video from 1:37-1:47, and feel free to message me if you want me to explain it in further detail because I’d love to. Seriously. Message me.
In relation to other DJ sets I’ve seen, Sander’s performance at New City Gas attracted by far the happiest and most mature crowd I’ve ever been a part of. Between the ongoing smoke projectors, captivating light show, and brand new visuals that were used, there wasn’t a person in New City Gas who remained unimpressed. Overall verdict of the night? Everybody in New City Gas had no choice other than to get loose when the mother fu*kng beat dropped. And believe me they did.

Not only did I get to attend an amazing performance that I will never forget, I also had the opportunity to meet with SanderVan Doorn, and have him answer questions that both friends and fans sent in to montrealnightlife.ca.
1. As an international DJ, how does Montreal compare to other cities you’ve been to? Every city has its charm. Different kinds of people, different environment. It’s hard to compare cities, because no city is the same.
2. New City Gas is a relatively intimate venue compared to larger music festivals you’ve performed at like Ultra. Which do you prefer? I like both! Big venues/festivals can be so overwhelming because of the amount of people that dance to the songs you play, but small venues have that special intimacy. You really connect with the people on the dance floor.
3. Your fan base is so diverse. How do you still keep your long-term fans interested while expanding your fan base to a younger raving crowd? You have to reinvent yourself from time to time, but the key is to stay yourself as well. People appreciate that and that gives you a certain kind of recognizable sound.
4. There have been a growing number of hard style producers entering the big room house scene recently. Have you found that this has influenced your sound? My sound is influenced by all kinds of genre’s, so it’s not particularly influenced by hard-style.
5. What music do you usually listen to on your iPod? Haha, well it depends in what kind of mood I’m in, but I listen to various genres. Even rock! I actually love Nirvana!
6. You have a career that people literally dream of. What was something you bought with your first significant paycheck? Records. Every penny I earned in the beginning went to buying new records.
7. If you could pick a newcomer to the EDM industry who you believe will blow up (in terms of success) within the next couple years, who would it be? Julian Jordan. He is extremely talented. Only 17 years old and already producing his own tracks and playing in the biggest cities in the world. I think this kid is going to be bigger and better. Definitely going to be huge!
8. If you could choose another career and money wasn’t an issue, what would you be? Wow, that’s a tough question. Anything? Maybe an A&R manager? I don’t know, too much cool things to pick from haha!

Here’s a pic of SanderVan Doorn and myself right after his set! Seriously, he never stops smiling! With such humble responses, it’s safe to say that the math was simpler than ever. Great Guy = Great Performance. We can’t wait until SanderVan Doorn comes back to Montreal, but until then…
…And if you want to check out Julian Jordan, who Sander foresees to be one of the biggest up incoming EDM DJ’s, here’s his soundcloud too! (Personally, I love it).
Until next time,
P.S.
I was totally serious about messaging me if you want to talk more about the concert. On another hand we are interviewing Nicky Romerro this Saturday so please send me your questions!
