The Must-See Performances of Igloofest in 2015
CELEBRATORY HEADLINE: IGLOOFEST IS FINALLY HERE AND MONTREAL IS FINALLY PREPARED FOR THE ANNUAL WINTER FESTIVAL.
Today marks the official beginning of Igloofest 2015 and the excitement seems to have become contagious in the air. Consider the fact that I’ve already spotted three Igloofest 2014 tuques this morning and all social platforms are buzzing in anticipation at the moment. It’s easily apparent that this freezing winter season will not cool the collective energy of future attendees.
In fact, Canadanightlife has taken the time to teach our readers about ten upcoming artists who will help define the major moments of this years festival. Each artist is listed below in chronological order of appearance with one song selected to offer a brief taste of music you might hear.
Gui Boratto
There is no doubt that this Brazilian mastermind will lead Igloofest in 2015 to a glorious beginning. The naturally sounding smooth tones and melodies of Gui Boratto are seemingly perfect to commence the entire festival season in Montreal’s winter. You can expect a sensual overload of majestic melodies as this producer takes on the first Friday of the festival. Prepare yourself for the cold though because temperatures tonight are at -26 degrees Celsius.
Kill Frenzy b2b J.Phlip
Three Dirtybird musicians tackle the Sapporo stage on January 17th, as Igloofest commemorates their annual Dirtybird appreciation. Last year’s headliner and label founder, Claude VonStroke, has handed down his status to San Francisco producer J.Phlip and Berlin based Kill Frenzy. These two talented forces will come together for a magnetic set of tech house. This is easily one of the most notable sets to mark down for the entire festival.
Justin Martin
If the already stacked Dirtybird day wasn’t enough, none other than Justin Martin will finish the night in full force. Justin Martin’s skills on deck are renounced for his versatile DJ sets. It feels rewarding to see VonStroke’s right hand man back for a second year at Igloofest. You can expect to hear a funky set where Martin is capable of dropping anything from West house rooted grooves to techno tracks.
Flosstradamus
This year’s Igloofest lineup has less trap artists than last year, but there are still some serious players coming to stir the crowd. Flosstradamus’s appearance in Montreal is long over due considering that these Hdynation heroes haven’t played in this city for an extended period of time. Their high level of energy on stage and consistency with filthy tracks is bound to cause a commotion on January 18th.
Oliver Heldens
One artist who it seems everyone is ecstatic to see is Oliver Heldens. This Dutch producer has established himself a permanent place on the entire blogosphere’s radar with every new release. After coming onto the electronic scene in just the past year, Oliver Heldens is already making major movement with multiple releases on Spinnin Records, his own radioshow, and a recent essential mix. Brace yourself for January 25th when Oliver Heldens will bring a frenzy of future house upon Igloofest.
John Digweed
John Digweed is the driving force behind Bedrock Records and a London based producer who has helped keep techno music alive. He will be taking Igloofest by storm on January 30th when he plays after Blond:ish and Paksal Daze at the Sapporo Stage. John Digweed will drop anything from experimental house tracks to spooky unreleased sounds from artists on his label.
Keys N Krates
Keys N Krates, a three person trap team, has just been announced as one of February 1st headliners. These Toronto natives will outshine Montreal in a display of talent, as their live sets are commonly known to be an amazing spectacle. Each member plays a separate instrument resulting in a sensual fusion of sonic delights. This late addition couldn’t have been better because Keys N Krates bring an extra element of hip-hop influence to a techno festival.
Tiga
The second unrevealed headliner to play February 1st is none other than Montreal’s own musician, Tiga. Having years of experience as an artist performing in Montreal’s culture, Tiga can be guaranteed to play above and beyond expectations when he’s fuelled by his own city. There is always a large audience of loyal supporters for a Tiga set in Montreal so I can only expect a warm welcome at Igloofest.
Midland b2b Paul Woolford
On February 7th, a massive collaboration of musical talent will merge when Midland and Paul Woolford play back-to-back at the Sapporo Stage. Both Midland and Paul Woolford are originally from the UK, showing apparent house influences rooted in their work. Together on decks can only be fathomed if one drops all sense of expectations and becomes consumed by the unique music. Each artist has a signature style that shall stick out significantly once their entwined on stage.
Luciano
The final night of Igloofest will be concluded in a similar spooky style as the start. With Gui Boratto opening the entire festival, it seems only fitting to close with a darkly toned techno artist. . Anyone lucky enough to have seen a Luciano set previously will know that this Swiss-Chilean house producer is capable of closing Igloofest with suave.
