Solaris Brings The Fire…Literally
Thanks to our friends at INK Entertainment, I had the pleasure of attending the Solaris Winter Music Festival at The Direct Energy Centre here in Toronto last weekend. Located in what is considered to be the newest building at the Exhibition Place, the venue was the perfect space to house such a large and rowdy crowd. Divided into separate areas to accommodate the all ages aspect of the show, the floor had designated drinking boundaries that eventually opened up to the main floor. Usually I am a bit wary when it comes younger crowds at these type of events, but the layout and the size made it a non-issue…I mean look at this crowd, it was insane.

With a line-up that not only was eclectic but massive in name, fans were treated to five intensely different sets that made for a well-rounded evening of raging.
Having already seen each of the acts multiple times this year, I had some preconceived notions as to what I was expecting from their sets for the evening. While I was slightly disappointed with Tiesto‘s choice of tunes (I won’t hold it against him since his after party set at Uniun blew fans away), Steve Angello impressed me with an incredibly aggressive set that had the crowd moving for hours. Massive shout out to Laidback Luke for the most diverse range of choices of the evening, dropping tracks by Disclosure, Calvin Harris, and throwing the crowd right back with his ‘Lion King‘ into Mufasa transition…He is to this day one of my favourite live performers with a unique sense of gaging crowd reactions.
Overall the event was a great success and definitely worth the value of a ticket. For the more experienced raver, nothing was out of the ordinary; however, the festival was a great transitory event for kids learning the ins and outs…The amount of people I taught how to properly shoulder ride, the limit does not exist. Plus, Steve Angello‘s set lit the stage on fire with massive cannons that totally threw me off…The production value was great.
My only criticism would have to be that the sound system at times felt drowned out by the cheering of the crowd…Considering this was one of the venue’s first electronic shows, it does not surprise me. On the bright side, it can easily be remedied for the next event! Cheers to a great night out with friends.
For those looking to find themselves in the crowd, the official album has been posted here!
