The GRAMMY Awards Announced A Grand Game-Changer Regarding Sampling
The Recording Academy (also known as the committee behind the GRAMMY Awards) announced a game-changer about sampling.
At their annual spring meeting, The Recording Academy’s Board of Trustees approved a few important changes to the GRAMMY Awards process. They have added a new category and changed the names of a few categories, but those changes are not the game-changer.
The most important game-changer that took place is that they now recognize samples and interpolations (a form of sampling) in all songwriting categories.
In other words, musicians who sampled and/or have been sampled by another musician will now be part of future nominations. Well-known songs with samples like Kanye West’s Stronger, Daft Punk’s Contact and Lady Gaga’s Poker Face will now have a chance at winning Song Of The Year.
“This year’s changes to our awards process are thoughtful, inclusive, and reflective of the current musical landscape” Neil Portnow, the president of The Recording Academy, stated in agreement to the sample-friendly changes.
Future samplers rejoice! *Kanye West smirk*
