A London-Inspired Cocktail Bar Is Taking Over A Legendary Location On Rachel Street

The new Mayfair cocktail bar on Rachel street is named after one of London’s most opulent neighbourhoods.

Unabashedly posh, the Mayfair envelops its patrons in the plush atmosphere of the late 19th century.

“I created a space reminiscent of 1880s England, which was an exciting time with the recent introduction of electricity,” explained designer Amlyne Phillips (Apt. 200, Scarlet, Fitzroy, Jatoba).

The furnishings, ornate lamps and warm ambiance call to mind an era when high society moved into the Mayfair area, building the grand Victorian buildings for which it is known today.

“When the curtains are drawn and the lighting dimmed, we want patrons to be transported to another world.”

A legendary location

Located at 451 Rachel Street East, the Mayfair can host 185 people. It occupies a space quite familiar to Montrealers, that of the legendary bar Le Sofa, which for more than a decade welcomed loyal customers from the Plateau and beyond.

Owners Kevin Latrem (Apt. 200, Fitzroy, General Sherman), Amine Ouadahi, Nick Léger and Frank Fisette plan to draw on this rich history when the Mayfair opens on Thursday May 28th.

A menu paired with the cocktail list

To round out the experience, starting in July, the Mayfair will offer a menu consisting of 10 gourmet dishes to complement its cocktails.

These British-inspired dishes come in small portions, allowing patrons to experience a variety of flavours.

The cocktail list was developed by none other than Lawrence Picard; the renowned mixologist has lent his name to the establishment, which intends to become Montreal’s authority on cocktails.

Tea room

In keeping with the tone of a late 19th century English bar, Mayfair transports you into a luxurious tea room befitting an aristocrat. But here, tea is mixed in alcoholised cocktails and served in a festive atmosphere that will change how Plateau residents see tea time.

Since tea goes hand in hand with the British Empire and its fascination with India, the establishment even has a private draped section with Indian accents available upon reservation that is surely going to be a hit.

Create your own cocktail

In addition to its décor, ambiance, delicious dishes and excellent cocktails, the Mayfair offers patrons an original experience sure to delight amateur mixologists and creative people of every ilk.

The Create your own cocktail concept gives customers a custom-made wooden bar kit with an array of ingredients and mixes, giving everyone the opportunity to fashion their own cocktail after explanation from a house mixologist.

This innovative activity will certainly stimulate the palate as well as conversation, making Mayfair a unique destination in Montreal.

A night at Mayfair

The Mayfair is both a cocktail bar and a spiked tea room on Rachel Street, perfect for happy hour, a night out with the girls, a romantic evening or a group outing. And on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, a DJ spins an eclectic mix of beats sure to get everyone on their feet.

The Mayfair is the ideal place to escape the daily grind and live like a British aristocrat while sipping a cocktail—or two!
